HOW TO ANALYSE A FOOTBALL MATCH

    A repeatable, coach-led workflow

SEE THE SHAPE. FIX THE GAME.

Match analysis is a skill, not a talent. Coaches who do it well follow a repeatable sequence: they watch the match once at full pace to get a feel, then return phase by phase with a clear question for each one. This page introduces the workflow TACTIXGRID uses and that any coach can apply with a notebook or with the platform.

The sequence is built around the five structural pillars, shape, pressing, transitions, build-up, rest-defence. Each pillar has a small number of questions you ask of the match. The answers are evidence. The evidence becomes the priority list for the next training session. The full workflow, including timing, sequencing, and the questions to ask at each step, is detailed below.

    Deep-Dive Sections

This page will expand with coach-validated examples, worked match scenarios, and case studies. The sections being built:

    • Step 1: First pass at full speed
    • Step 2: Pillar-by-pillar review
    • Step 3: Tag the structural moments
    • Step 4: Identify the three priorities
    • Step 5: Convert priorities into training intent

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a structured analysis take?

Around 60,90 minutes with a framework. Without one, coaches often spend three to four hours and still miss the structural cause.

Can I do this without software?

Yes. A notebook and a clear framework is enough. Software helps you scale across multiple matches and share the evidence with players.

What if I only have time for one pass?

Watch for structural shape and rest-defence. They are the two pillars most likely to explain what went wrong.
