    What is Rest Defence?

Rest defence is the shape your team holds while in possession, the players who are positioned not to attack, but to win the ball back the instant it is lost.

    Why it matters

Most goals against possession-based teams come from transitions. Rest defence is what turns those transitions from goals into recycled possession.

    How coaches use it

Top coaches design rest defence by counting bodies behind the ball (typically 3+1 or 4+1), spacing them across the pitch, and assigning the deepest midfielder a specific cover-shadow role.

    Common mistake

Committing too many players forward in the build-up, leaving full-backs high and no screen in front of the centre-backs.
